Friday, September 30, 2005--Today, I woke up in time for lunch, after which I went to "review" for the CS170 mudterm. It turned out to be a horrible test. The questions were easy, yeah, but they didn't give us enough time. If only I had 30 more minutes.
Ah, well. I'll be happy if I can break 70.
On this day:
In 2002:

This marks the beginning of our 4th year. Oh, frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!
On this day:
In 2002:
- My website is born!!
- Alan Watson makes his first appearance in my journal.
Somehow, I managed to crawl out of bed to attend
CS188 Lecture... During most of the class, I was distracted by Nadia, who had distracted herself with picking her classes for the rest of her college life.
EE125 Lecture... Mmm... Inverse Kinematics...
(went home to do revise the CS162 design)
TBP Candidate Meeting! I love these things. Apparently, David from fencing is an EECS major, and he's pledging, as is Ryan W from Flour last year and Kelly from Physics 7B and 7C. It was good to see all those people again. And we also played a Charades/Telephone combination a la Super Sunday from Heaven knows how long ago. It was amusing.

Saturday, September 24, 2005 - Addendum--Ah, to continue where I left off... After the Ravnica Prerelease, I went to Kellie's place, where I let her watch Advent Children while I sorted and recorded my memories of today's prerelease. I also saw Naruto on Toonami, which isn't bad compared to other dubbed anime. They kept most of the original Japanese words (for flavor, it seems), and the voice actors weren't too annoying (although they could have been better... I think there's a fixed set of voice actors for anime).
It was also at Kellie's house during which I typed up my webjournal entries.

Saturday, September 24, 2005--So today, I woke up at 7am (which is about 2 hours earlier from what I've been waking up these last few weeks), so I could catch the Light Rail at 8:25am to the San Jose Convention Center for the
Ravnica Prerelease
(If I mention a card you don't know, you can go to
The Gatherer to look them up.)
So I get there at 8:50am, and I register, but we don't get started until, like, just before noon, because there were tons of people (600+) trying to get registered for the tournament.
Anyways, we finally get started, and I get a bunch of cards. I originally wanted to play Boros (Red/White guild), but everyone was telling me green this green that. Finally, since I had so much black removal (well, 2 solid black removal and 4 other situational removal spells), I decided to go with the Golgari (Green/Black). However, I found that I needed more good cards, so I decided to spash in some blue, which led me to a Green-Black-Blue deck. Unfortunately, it seems Green-Black-Blue was the most popular combination at the pre-release. That and, it was nearly impossible for anyone to find Forests, much like how it was hard to find Swamps at Kamigawa events.
So my final deck looks like this:
6xForest
7xSwamp
3xIsland
Golgari Rot Farm
Golgari Signet
Dimir Signet
Centaur Safeguard
Darkblast
Stinkweed Imp
Moldervine Cloak
Golgari Brownscale
Nightmare Void
Greater Mossdog
Gaze of the Gorgon
Lurking Informant
Dimir House Guard
Brainspoil
2xSurveilling Sprite
Throughtpicker Witch
Clinging Darkness
2xDisembowel
Elvish Skysweeper
Civic Wayfinder
2xBramble Elemental
Some other interesting cards that were in my pool were: a signet of every guild (and 2 of Selesnya), two Excruciators, a foil Sandsower, a Hunter Lammasu, a Scion of the Wild, a Brightflame, and a Murray Evans. (LOL, those Pro Tour Player cards are amusing, but since they're not actual Magic cards, they don't interest me very much. I just need to find someone who likes Pro Tour Player cards and sell it to that person.) Also, they gave us a promotional Gleancrawler, but obviously, we can't use it since it wasn't part of our pool.
Game 1: I played this 13-year-old kid named Alastair, who started when he was 5 years old. He found it amusing how right when he turns 13, Wizards starts putting the "Age 13+" label on the box. His DCI number was JOE128, because apparently, when you forget your DCI number, they call you Joe. The deck he built was Blue-Black, and for some reason, he didn't know there was a 40 card minimum, so he played 37 cards until we told him to add 3 cards to his deck. About the match itself, I don't remember much, except that I was owning him. I remember in the second game, he tried to play a Necromancer's Thirst on my Greater Mossdog, trying to make me help him bring back his creatures from the grave. Unfortunately, I just sacrificed the Mossdog to my Thoughtpicker Witch, making his Necromancer's Thirst fall of, and I replayed him. Also, since he was completely out of creatures, I used the Thoughtpicker (several times, actually) to deny him from drawing any creatures, so I just walked right over him unopposed.
Record: 1-0
Game 2: I played a guy who's name was apparently Nguyen Nguyen, and he was by far my strongest opponent today. He played a Green-Black-Blue contraption (apparently, Green-Black-Blue is
very good), and he had these huge blue defenders that I just couldn't get around. In the first game, he even managed to get me down to 2 life. Somehow, I made a comeback with the Greater Mossdog, the Golgari Brownscale, and the Moldervine Cloak, and everytime he managed to destroy one, I just dredged it right back. Clearly, dredge is
damn good. It was so devastating to him, he sideboarded in a Nullmage Shepherd just to deal with the Cloak. (Of course, since I could dredge it back, it didn't help
that much.) In this second game, though, he beat me squarely. In the third game, we ran out of time, so we just declared it a draw. The game could have gone either way anyway.
Record: 1-0-1
Game 3: You know what the neatest thing about playing with 600 other people? There's most certainly someone with your record, so the seedings don't get screwed up. I played this guy named Jason who had a Green-White deck, in which he ran quite a few limited bombs. In the first game, I was mana flooded, so he beat me no problem. In the second game, I beat him, although I don't remember how. It was probably some combination of the Mossdog, the Brownscale, the Cloak, and possibly some Bramble Elementals and saproling tokens. Finally, in the third game, we have 10 minutes left, and I'm thinking, crap, I'm going to have another draw on my record and I'm going to have to fight for my prizes. Fortunately, in game 3, I get off to a fast start, getting out my Brownscale and Cloak (which, together, are a 5/6), and I start beating him down. After that, he's forced to chump-block repeatedly. (I'm at 14 life, and he's eventually goes down to 2.) Then, he managed to top-deck a Votary of the Conclave, which is a 1/1 with regeneration. For a while, he rebuilds his army and gets out 2 attackers, a 2/2 and a 2/1, and with those two, he knocks me down to 6 life. However, that's when I get out another Bramble Elemental, and I attack into him with it, and he double blocks to destroy the Bramble Elemental. Thus, we're back to Cloak'ed Brownscale versus Votary. However, as I dredge back the Nightmare Void to force him to discard, I notice the Darkblast in my graveyard that I had forgotten upon. You see, Darkblast gives a creature -1/-1, which means they can't regenerate out of it, and it has Dredge 3, so on the next turn, I dredge the Darkblast back, wipe out his Votary, and attack for the win. (It was such a close game that I gave a sigh of relief... close as in I almost ran out of time, not that he almost beat me.)
Record: 2-0-1
Game 4: There's a funny thing about being 2-0-1. Assuming that you and your opponent are both 2-0-1 (which they are, because there are 600 of us--in fact, there was a whole table of 2-0-1's), if you draw, you get 4 boosters each for a total of 8. If one of you wins, the winner gets 11 boosters while the loser gets 3, for a total of 14. Thus, while most people make deals by declaring draws, you can't draw if you have 2-0-1, unless you want to forgo prizes. In any case, I played this guy named Eli, with whom I struck a deal. No matter who wins, we split the booster packs and each go home with 7. He agreed, and then we played a stress-free, friendly game. Eli seemed to be playing a multi-color contraption in white, green, black, and blue. The colors were clearly messing him up, since he often lacked the mana to play certain spells. In this case, I'd push my advantage by playing Nightmare Void and forcing him to discard some otherwise good spells. That was how I won the first game, in a matter of mere minutes. In the second game, he managed to get out Concerted Effort (which allows creatures to essentially share abilities), Tattered Drake (with which he used to grant all his creatures flying), and some other creature that gave first strike and vigilance. Fortunately, I managed to destroy his first-striking vigilance guy, but the damage was already done. I had no blockers for his fliers, and thus, he flew in for the win. Third game, though, he's again color-screwed, so I beat him, and we go off the claim the prize boosters.
Final Record: 3-0-1
w00t! 3-0-1! This is my personal best since (I believe) the Champions of Kamigawa prerelease when I went 3-1, but struck a deal and ended up with 4 boosters instead of 6. This time around, if I hadn't struck a deal, I would have had 11 boosters, but instead, I wound up with 7, which is still more prize than I had ever come home with, so I'm happy.
I guess the Golgari are just that damn good!
Anyways, interesting cards in my prize boosters included: a Necromancer's Thirst, a Grozoth, a Dark Heart of the Wood (isn't this card a reprint?), a Selesnya Guildmage, a Perplex, a Talsimir Wolfblood (his name sounds very Legends-ish), a Dimir Aqueduct, another Golgari Rot Farm, a Dream Leash, a Boros Garrison, an
Overgrown Tomb (w00t! New dual land!), a Telling Time, a Concerted Effort, a foil Cyclopean Snare, a Vindicative Mob (can't be blocked by
saprolings, LOL!), a Duskmantle (House of Shadow), a Grave-Shell Scarab (the poster boy for Dredge), a Sunforger, and a foil Farseek.
Anyways, that was the meat of my day. Lots and lots of
MTG. Fun stuff! You should try it some time. (In case anyone is wondering, I'm talking to that cute girl over there.)
I'm going to end it right here. I'll post an addendum later that will have stuff I'd include in my regular entry, like
On This Day and

Anyways, Good Night!

Happy Birthday to my mother!
Today, I finally woke up early, but it was for naught, since all the showers were taken. Oh, well. At least I tried.
CS188 Lecture...
Kim K: So I guess Nadia isn't coming to lecture anymore?
EE125 Lecture... More breakthroughs! (kinda)
(break)
I went to the TBP Interview Workshop, as one of the speakers. I gave advice that, from my experience, was quite valid, yet untraditional. Stuff like "Just relax. Yes, the interview is important, but if you're a nervous wreck, you've already screwed it up." and "In a technical interview, it's not about the knowledge, but about the creativity and the approach to the problem. So rather than staying up all night cramming, it's better to get a good night's sleep so that your brain is well-rested to do some thinking." Good stuff!
Then, I went fencing. Vivian wasn't there, but I ran into another girl named Vivian.
Me: Oh, so you must be the other Vivian that I've heard about.
Other Vivian: Other Vivian?
Me: Yeah. The first Vivian was at ice cream on Monday.
Other Vivian: Oh... I only come on Thursdays.
She's not as awesome as Vivian Vivian, though.

Monday, September 19, 2005--There were two monolithic (although perhaps not the most interesting) events, and some boring class filler in between.
Anyways, in the morning, after lunch at Xroads with Abhi and Chris, I went to Abhi's place to finish the EE125 Lab, because Abhi has Mathematica. Then, I finished CS188 homework. However, what made it an awesome day instead of just a good day was that Vivian was there. Apparently, her mom doesn't want her walking home late at night by herself, for safety reasons, it seems. Maybe I should offer to walk her home. On the one hand, it'd more than double the amount of time it takes for me to walk home. On the other hand, I'd get to spend time with Vivian, which would make it a

Today was a Cal football game! It was the California Golden Bears vs the Illinois Fighting Illini. (What the shit is an Illini?) The first 3 quarters were riddled with shady referee'ing, which resulted in Illinois gaining the lead and staying in the lead for the first 3 quarters. It got so bad that by the third quarter, I was no longer in the mood for cheering.
Then, in the 4th quarter, we made a kickass comeback and won 35-20. Not one of our best games, but we had an explosive finish.

CS188 Lecture... Nadia wasn't at lecture today... Therefore, I almost fell asleep.
Kim (not Hung): Is Nadia coming to lecture today?
Me: I have no idea. (Why are you asking me?)
EE125 Lecture... For some reason, I was completely unable to focus. It might have to do with the fact that I've seen all this material in Graphics, so I felt no need to pay any attention. That and Tendick was covering mostly the same stuff as he covered on Tuesday, even the exact same equations and stuff.

Wednesday, September 14, 2005--Anyways, so today, I went to CS162 Discussion (those bastards moved me from 2-3 to 11-12, those bastards), CS170 Discussion, CS170 Lecture, and CS162 Lecture, but the important thing is, I watched Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children. Mark S gave me a CD with it. So here's a spoiler free review for you, as quoted from my post on
Avalanche Online Forums:
"I know that FF7: AC isn't released outside of Japan yet, and I know a lot of you don't want to watch the imported version (or the Japanese version obtained by other means), so I made this review spoiler-free so that those of you who are curious but haven't seen the movie can read this with impunity.
Anyways, I just saw Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children just now. Personally, I think the movie was all right. It wasn't great, but it wasn't horrible, either. It had some absolutely fantastic action scenes, which would have been physically impossible to produce if this movie weren't CG.
The storyline, on the other hand, seemed to be a little lacking, and the plot is rather convoluted and confusing. Granted, there is an explanation for everything that happens in the story, but the movie itself never actually provides that explanation. That and, after the movie, I had to think to myself, "What was the point of this movie?" After a few minutes, I could understand the point the movie-makers were trying to get across, but they seemed to have problems expressing it through the film.
I am aware that there are a lot of artistic films that purposely hide away the real meaning to their movie and require that the audience think about what they just saw in order to truly understand it. However, FF7: AC, while badass, simply wasn't artistic enough to justify the lack of story coherence.
However, if you played the original FF7 and enjoyed it, I recommend you see this movie, if for no other reason than the kick ass fight scenes and to see your favorite FF7 characters with high-resolution almost-realistic character models (yay Yuffie!). The portrayals of the characters in terms of their old FF7 selves is pretty accurate (although I still think the Turks should have been portrayed as more badass than they were in the movie).
In any case, as a work of art, FF7: AC wasn't very good. However, as sheer entertainment, FF7: AC is quite a fun watch. Whether you'd want to see it or not depends on whether or not you prefer artistic movies or fun movies (and whether or not you're a die hard FF7 fan)."
Dice Roll of the Day: (4, 1) Total: 5
Also, I learned today that skipping breakfast
and lunch is a bad idea. Fortunately, I was able to get some lunch at 2pm, even though the GBC line was still ridiculous. However, since I went to the Microsoft Infosession, I completely forgot about dinner. Oops. Oh well.
Anyhow, Good Night!
Tuesday, September 13, 2005--Heh, here are some stats that I meant to put up a while ago, but eh...
You know how in v1.0 of the Dark Fiend Sanctuary, my webjournal archive was divided arbitrarily? (Well, actually, it was divided up into even 100 kilobyte chunks, but the average bystander would not have noticed that. The v2.0 journal, which is divided by months
and has a month selector is far superior.) Well, apparently, the first year of webjournal was from part 1 to part 9, which is about 9 parts. The second year was from part 9 to part 16, which is about 8 parts. The third year is from part 16 to what would have been part 20. which is 5 parts. So that means, every year, I keep writing less and less in my webjournal. That means one of a few things:
- I'm getting lazier
- My memory is becoming hazier
- My life is getting boringer
- A combination of the above
Interesting, isn't it? (Although I have been writing a bit lately. Maybe it's just because I barely posted any content during my 2.5 months at Microsoft. Who knows?)

Anyways, in the morning, I had lunch with Abhi and Chris, where, for some reason, we ended up talking about graphics cards (like we tend to do), but my knowledge on, like graphics cards is very limited. I mean, I know basically how graphics engines work, but I don't know jack shit about what cards are good and what their specs are. Afterwards, I helped Abhi with his EE125 homework.

Anyways, the best part of today was fencing, if for no other reason than because Vivian was there (even though she was, like, 10-15 minutes late, but beggars can't be choosers, ya know). Also, the beginners got to use swords and they learned *gasp* the
disengage technique. It took me, like, a month before Lee taught that to us in my freshman year.
Me: I don't think we've met. Either that or we've met and I've forgotten your name, which is the same thing.
Vivian's friend: Hi, I'm Michelle.
Me: I'm Dwayne. Nice to meet you. Vivian and I went to high school together... kinda...
Also, some lucky beginners got to learn how to fight while Erik demonstrated basically how a bout works.
However, during that bout, Abdul gave me a private lessons, and we had to move to the strip behind the crowd of beginners, because some foilists wanted to set up an electric strip in the middle of the room. However, apparently, a saber private lesson is a lot more interesting than 2 beginners just learning how to fence, because so many heads turned to watch us that Abdul had to stop and tell them to watch the bout that Erik was trying to teach. It probably has something to do with the fact that when sabers clash, they make the loudest noise and that saber is the most awesome of the three weapons to watch. (It's also the most awesome of the three weapons to fight with, but that probably isn't why people were so interested in watching us.)
Finally, when Vivian and her friend Michelle were heading back to Foothill, they took the longer path down Bancroft, so I ended up walking with them until I had to turn south and they had to turn north. The fact that they took this path probably has very little to do with the fact that I take this path, though, unless it does, in which case I should be happy.
But I am happy. It was a Good Night!
Sunday, September 11, 2005--Today, I did a little bit of homework, at some Kentucky Fried Chicken, and made my triumphant return to UC Berkeley.
But the biggest thing I did today was that I finished porting

Anyways, Good Night! Hopefully, next time I see you, it will be in
v2.0.
Friday, September 9, 2005--
Happy Birthday to Connie Chu!
This morning, I meant to wake up earlier (but failed) so that I could go to
Donuts & Bagels with TBP... I still went, but by the time I arrived, they had ran out of Donuts and only the crappy Bagels were left. But I still had a chat with the gang and I solved, like, 2 crossword words while Trent and Angela were doing the crossword.
Lunch at the GBC...
Hanging out in the HKN Office with LenWei, Stephanie "SSL" Leung, and XiaoXiao Wang...
EE125 Discussion... Apparently, I finished half of the homework during discussion, and by half, I mean the second half. (I had finished the first half yesterday.)
Then, I went home.
Dice Roll of the Day: (3, 1) Total: 4
Therefore, Good Night!
Thursday, September 8, 2005--I like Thursdays.
CS188 Lecture...
EE125 Lecture...
EE125 Homework... isn't too bad...
Dice Roll of the Day: (5, 3) Total: 8
Fencing... It's still 8pm, so I haven't gone yet, but if everything goes as expected, it will be good. It will be marvelously good.
It will be marvelously Good Night!
Wednesday, September 7, 2005--CS170 Discussion...
CS162 Discussion... apparently, Melody is in my discussion, although we're getting shuffled around, so Melody might not be in my discussion anymore.
CS170 Lecture...
(During this break, I go to buy a book, and at the ASUC store, I see
Sarah C, w00t! Anyways, Sarah is awesome because Sarah is awesome. Then, I eat dinner at the GBC, turn in my CS170 homework, and register my group for CS162.)
CS162 Lecture... After break, I moved up to sit with Melody, because Melody is awesome. I remember how I used to sit with her all the time in EE20 Lecture... except she doesn't remember. Damn!
TBP Member Game Night... I played Egyptian Rat Screw (well, not really, I just slapped the winners really really hard). Then, I played Illuminati, which is an amusing game.
Dice Roll of the Day: (2, 6) Total: 8
Well, I must say again... Good Night!
Tuesday, September 6, 2005--Ah, the return of classes. How joyous (not really).
CS188 Lecture... So Nadia joins me for lecture.
Me: Is that Melody? Hey, look! It's Melody!
Melody: *comes sits by me* Hey, what's up?
Nadia: Dwayne, help me with EE120 homework.
Me: *helps Nadia with EE120 homework* *notices that Melody is gone* Hey, where did Melody go?
Hehe... oops!
EE125 Lecture...
CS188 Discussion... apparently, they have robot camel jockies in the Saudi Arabia.
TBP Meeting...
Anyways, I spent the rest of the day solving the CS170 homework. I had some really elegant solutions, so it was good.
Dice Roll of the Day: (2, 1) Total: 3
I'd hate to say it again, but... Anyways, Good Night
Monday, September 5, 2005--Happy Labor Day!
Today, I played Diablo 2, worked on my other website, and... and... Hmm... I think that's it.
Dice Roll of the Day: (5, 2) Total: 7
I hope all will turn out to be Good.
...Night!
Sunday, September 4, 2005 - Addendum--Oh, also, since the Diablo 2 Ladder reset less than a month ago, today, I finally got around to creating my new Ladder character. He's a Spear Barbarian named Mardonius, after the Persian General. Hmm... maybe I should dig out my old Greek Literature stuff. Greek Literature, be it mythology or history, is a good source of names.
Sunday, September 4, 2005--Still burned...
Anyways, I spent my day doing a combination of working on
The Dark Fiend Sanctuary v2.0 and hanging out with my floormates.
Also, Ravnica previews began today on
MagicTheGathering.com.
Split mana!
Dice Roll of the Day: (4, 6) Total: 10
Apparently, I shouldn't ask Lei for advice. Anyways, Good Night!
Saturday, September 3, 2005--Today, I went to the football game, Cal vs Sacramento State, with Lindsay (the health worker), Laura (Lindsay's roommate), Cat of the 3rd floor, (Grace had disappeared off the face of the planet), and a bunch of other people from the 4th floor, (but not that one person I really wanted to go to the game with, and that makes me sad).
We owned Sac State. We
owned them good. The final score was 41-3.
Unfortunately, Ayoob, our new "good" quarterback didn't play too well today. He didn't have many pass completions. Most of our touchdowns came from fantastic plays, like when the guy returned the kick for the touchdown.
Also, I got sunburned in the face. I didn't know my face could sunburn. Next time, I'm wearing sunblock.
Dice Roll of the Day: (3, 6) Total: 9
On a completely unrelated note, apparently, Albert is now tutoring Florence. Haha, Florence is awesome. If she can survive me, she can survive anything.
Good Night!
Friday, September 2, 2005--First Friday of the semester...
On this day:
In 2003: Abhishek Mishra makes his first appearance in my online journal.
Anyhow, in the morning, I worked on my CS170 Homework. After spending about two hours thinking about this one hard problem, I solved it, so I was like "Hurray!" But then it turned out two of the problems I had solved earlier were wrong, so I was like "Damn it!" But it's all good.
EE125 Discussion... we reviewed Linear Algebra. It was pretty trivial. Also, there was this cute girl sitting next to me, but then she decided to move to a seat closer to the front. 5 seconds after she moved, the GSI said, "Now, I want you to meet the people around you." And I'm like damn, that cute girl just left.
CS170 Lecture... I ditched this because it happened at the same time as EE125 Discussion. I have an irresolvable schedule conflict.
Afterwards, I hit up Eudemonia and bought a Saviors of Kamigawa fat pack. Unfortunately, I'm a bit tired right now, so I'll describe the cards I got later.
Finally, after dinner, I chilled with my floormates. We went out for some donuts. (I saw Sarah C at the Asian Ghetto... Sarah...) Then, we came back to Cunningham Hall for brownies. However, as someone opened the stairwell door for us, we snuck on right up the elevator and started messing around. First, we went to the 3rd floor and threw a chair off the balcony so that it would hang by the chain and match Griffiths. Then, we got some guy in Ehrman to do the same. Unfortunately, we failed in Davidson. Back in Griffiths, we pulled some shit with the UCDC, the University of California Department of Communications. Hehe... No, we weren't drunk. We're just awesome like that.
Dice Roll of the Day: (3, 5) Total: 8
Something seems to be missing... Oh well, Good Night!
Thursday, September 1, 2005--Anyways, I spent most of my morning doing homework, because I decided that I should.
CS188 Lecture... I ran into Diana from CS61b so many semesters ago. She's in CS188, apparently. (She's a Cog Sci major.) Also, Nadia sat with us. (Apparently, Nadia and Diana are anagrams of each other.) Also, Vik S joined us.
Me: Apparently, Melody is in our class.
Nadia: Yeah, I know. That's what I was trying to tell you on Tuesday.
Me: ...oh.
EE125 Lecture... it's mostly review of stuff I had seen in CS184, except Prof Tendick actually tried to prove all the stuff.
Then, I slacked off for the rest of the afternoon, because I didn't feel like doing homework.
Finally, I went fencing. Vivian was there. Therefore, it was good.
Dice Roll of the Day: (6, 3) Total: 9
Therefore, it was Good Night!
