May 1-3, 2014 – Although it’s really Tres de Mayo.
Like I said last time, I was practicing making a Mexican dinner for my friends on Cinco de Mayo. This was that dinner.
So I watched Oculus the other day. The movie is less scary and more psychological. It’s a must-watch for any horror movie fan.
The movie is brilliantly written, well shot, and excellently acted. Shortly into the movie, I suspended my disbelief and “forgot” that I was seeing Amy Pond and Starbuck. And Karen Gillan’s American accent was so spot on that my cohort didn’t realize that she has a native Scottish accent.
Overall, 4 stars out of 5, good movie, strongly recommended. Now for some discussion with lots of spoilers, after the cut.
I saw the new Captain America with some of my friends today. Here are my thoughts after the cut.
Saturday June 19 2004 to Thursday Apr 17 2014
The first sabre I owned finally broke during a practice bout against Abigail at Salle Auriol Seattle. We had each won a practice bout, and we were just starting the third practice bout. As the refereee said go, we both stepped into the box. She went for an attack, and I went for a parry. Except I was moving forward fairly quickly, and I mis-timed the parry, so our swords clashed guard to guard, and my blade snapped off at the base. (Incidentally, parrying while going forward is a habit I need to break. It’s a good move if I can time it correctly, but most of the time it means I lose the attack.)
She seemed a little freaked out. I was rather non-chalant about it. (“Welp, I’m done for the night. How about we call it a draw?”) Despite being the first blade I’ve owned, Old Rusty was the second blade I’ve broken. And in my many years of fencing, I’ve had two or three blades broken on me before.
Highlights of Old Rusty’s long career include:
Thursday, November 4, 2014 – Severin attacks, and I parry with Old Rusty, and his blade shatters over my head upon impact. Later that night, I caught a metal splinter in my left hand from running my hand down Old Rusty.
Saturday, October 30, 2014 – The UCSC tournament where I fence like a demon. I win 2 out of 5 pool bouts, upset the 15th seed in the direct elimination, and get 7 points against 10 on the 2nd seed.
Mid-2013 – After breaking my electric sabre, I take Old Rusty’s blade and insert it into the electric sabre’s hilt. At this point, Old Rusty is old and rusty, so I name it Old Rusty.
Old Rusty was almost 10 years old at the time of its death. It was bound to break sooner or later. Might as well have been today. Maybe I deserved it for cheap-shotting Abigail with so many point-in-line attacks.
Saturday, April 12, 2014 – Like I said last week, I’m practicing making a Mexican dinner for Cinco de Mayo. And I needed a dessert. And tres leches cake is a traditional Mexican dessert and plays into my cake baking skills.
April 5-6, 2014 – Some backstory: My friends know I’m really into cooking, that I’m a chocoholic, and that I frequently combine strange flavors. (The famous example being the burger with chocolate sauce. But that’s a story for another day.) At least 2 different friends indepdendently told me I should check out mole and learn how to make mole. (The Mexican food, not the furry animal.) So I did.
Saturday, March 29, 2014 – So I had a proper homework assignment from my Sizzleworks cooking class: bake a cake, make frosting, and bring them to class on Monday to learn how to decorate.
Tuesday, March 25, 2014 – The Charity Bake Sale, Spring 2014 Edition just ended. This year, we had 28 volunteer bakers, 16 volunteer sellers, 4 Varzea volunteers, and 1 poster designer. We raised a grand total of $2190, beating our previous record of $2158. The proceeds are being split between Seattle Humane Society and Seattle Children’s Hospital.
Saturday, March 15, 2014 – No, not that kind of 4X. There are 4 kinds of chocolate in this cake. Chocolate cake (obviously), chocolate ganache, chocolate buttercream frosting, and for good measure, chocolate chips. (Because why do when you can overdo?)
Saturday, March 8, 2014 – I’m taking a cake baking and decorating class at Sizzleworks. So the time I would use for cooking, I now use for baking.
